Revised law increases retirement age for army officers

Coming into force on December 1, 2024, the Law amending a number of articles of the Law on Officers of the Vietnam People’s Army (the Law), is expected to provide a legal foundation for developing a contingent of officers of the Vietnam People’s Army in the new context.

The Law extends the in-service length for army officers, enabling them to qualify for a pension rate of 75 percent. Specifically, the retirement age for in-service company-grade officers and majors is increased by four years to 50 and 52, respectively. Meanwhile, the retirement age for lieutenant-colonels and senior lieutenant-colonels is 54 (up by three years) and 56 (up by two years), respectively. As for colonels, the retirement age is 58, i.e., up by one year for men or by three years for women. The retirement age for male generals is kept unchanged while that for female generals is up by five years, both at 60.

Revised law increases retirement age for army officers

The Law additionally provides holders of deputy heads within the system of basic officer ranks in the Vietnam People’s Army, ensuring equivalence to titles and positions in the apparatus of the Party’s and State’s agencies.

According to the Law, the number of holders of the rank of General must not exceed three, including the Minister of National Defense, the Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army, and the Director of the General Department of Politics.

The Law also states that officers’ biological and lawfully adopted children aged full 18 or older who are in school age and not covered by health insurance will be issued health insurance cards.
