Vietnam visas for foreign citizens

Our family is planning a trip to Vietnam during the New Year festival. Could you tell us about the form and validity of Vietnam visas?

Under Article 7 of the 2014 Law on Foreigners’ Entry into, Exit from, Transit through and Residence in Vietnam which was revised under Article 1.2 of the 2019 Law on Foreigners’ Entry into, Exit from, Transit through and Residence in Vietnam and Article 2.1 of the 2023 Law on Exit and Entry of Vietnamese Citizens and Law on Foreigners’ Entry into, Exit from, Transit through and Residence in Vietnam, Vietnam visas may take the forms of visa sticker, loose-leaf visa or e-visa.

Each member of your family will be granted a single-entry or multiple-entry visa. If you have an under-14 child who shares the passport with you or your spouse, he/she will also share the Vietnam visa granted to you or your spouse. If he/she has his/her own passport, he/she will be granted a separate visa.

Please note that if you are a cruise ship passenger applying for a Vietnam entry/transit visa through a travel agent, you will only be granted a single-entry visa.

The law on exit and entry also prescribes that the visa status may not be changed, except in the following cases:

(i) The visa holder has papers proving that he/she is an investor or the representative of a foreign organization investing in Vietnam in accordance with Vietnam’s law;

(ii) The visa holder has papers proving that he/she is the father, mother, spouse, or child of the person who invites or sponsors him/her;

(iii) The visa holder has entered Vietnam on a visa sponsored by his/her employer and been granted a work permit or a certificate of exemption from a work permit in accordance with the labor law;

(iv) The visa holder has entered Vietnam on an e-visa and been granted a work permit or a certificate of exemption from work permit in accordance with the labor law.
